Developed by the experts at Fuel Sport & Spine, the OsteoFuel program is designed to prevent the progression of osteoporosis and osteopenia and reduce the risk of fractures.
This program incorporates physical therapy, musculoskeletal care, acupuncture, and spinal decompression to strengthen your body, reduce pain, and stimulate bone health.
Unlike many clinics, our providers have specific training in osteoporosis management. Our comprehensive, individualized program includes outcome measures to track progress. In 1:1 sessions, we assess movement, postural alignment, and balance, making adjustments as needed.
Our OsteoFuel Program integrates multiple treatment types that use the latest evidence-based research. Our comprehensive approach aims to prevent the progression of osteoporosis and osteopenia and reduce the risk of fractures.
Low-impact aerobic activities like walking, dancing, or climbing stairs to your stimulate bone health.
Activities like standing on one leg, Tai Chi, and balance boards/foam pads to improve coordination and prevent falls.
Strengthen your muscles surrounding bones to provide added support and reduce the risk of falls. You’ll use weights, resistance bands, and body-weight exercises such as squats and lunges
Learn to walk in a way to optimize weight bearing, reduce the likelihood of falls, and address abnormalities that have developed due to postural changes.
We’ll focus on facilitating your Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
Techniques like yoga or dynamic stretching keep your muscles and joints flexible, and reduce your risk of injury.
Helps to improve your soft tissue mobility and elasticity, decrease pain, and allow for better elongation of muscles that attach to the spine.
We’ll educate you on maintaining correct posture during daily activities to minimize strain on bones and joints.
You may be prescribed specific exercises to promote spinal health and prevent compression on vertebrae—including posture correction exercises and stretches for the back.
We use a gentle mechanical spinal decompression that is optimized for your individual anatomy.
We focus on acupoints that help stimulate your bones and joints, reduce pain, and balance the body’s energy. Specific points might target bone health, such as those on the lower back, knees, wrists, and feet.
We use these acupoints to activate areas related to your kidneys and liver (according to Traditional Chinese Medicine) since they are believed to influence bone health.
Acupuncture can be used to reduce your pain, especially in areas that have been weakened by osteopenia or osteoporosis, such as the lower back or joints.
Improve blood flow to your bones and joints to promote healing and growth.
We’re fully dedicated to ensuring your rehab is safe and effective—here are some answers to frequently asked questions, to help you find out if OsteoFuel is right for you.
Absolutely! We have many patients coming into the clinic with a diagnosis of osteopenia and who are engaged in various exercise programs outside of the clinic. The exercises performed at OsteoFuel are specific to osteoporosis and are targeted toward helping to elongate the spine and load the bones properly to encourage bone growth. They can be performed in conjunction with the recreational activities you are already doing. We do our best to enable our patients to engage in a fully active lifestyle while doing the things that they love!
Research has shown that walking alone is not enough to fend off bone loss. Additionally, the way that you walk and the pace at which you walk are also factors that influence how much weight bearing you achieve in a given walk. What is most effective is a combination of balance exercises, resistance training, and postural re-education.
Your recovery will depend on the severity of the fracture. Treatment often involves rest, physical therapy, nutritional counseling and maybe medications to promote bone healing. After recovery, maintaining bone strength with exercise and nutrition is key to preventing further fractures.
The decline in estrogen during menopause causes an imbalance between bone resorption (breakdown) and bone formation, leading to accelerated bone loss, which increases the risk of osteoporosis. This is why bone health is especially important during and after menopause.
Bone density loss can be rapid in the first 5-7 years after menopause, with some women losing up to 20% of their bone density. Early intervention is key!
